The English Department is the largest department in Riversdale Community College. We have a mission statement on how we see our role in providing our students with the best education, course provisions and modules. We have set aims and targets on how we propose to implement our mission. We believe language is fundamental to the student’s development. It is the essential vehicle of expression, empowering the student to be effective in communication, personal development, cultural identity and critical skills.
We will work to encourage students to attain their full potential in English at all levels. We promote the language through creative, positive and inclusive learning. We address the individual needs of every student at each stage of their educational progress. We celebrate and encourage each student to reach his/her potential. We respect diversity and give individual attention to students with challenges at whatever level, students with special needs, and students where English is not a first language.

We are proud to say there has been a JCSP library in Riversdale Community College since 2009. This is a fantastic school resource; the English department regularly brings students to the library for various reading strategies such as paired, group and class reading.
There are many genres, levels and language books on offer in the library to suit every kind of reader.
This is all done in an attempt to improve the reading levels and ultimately the learning capacity of our students. The library is open for students to visit at specific times before and after school and during some lunch breaks. Students also take part in some clubs here at the library at these times.
