Granite is the signature rock of the continents. More then that, granite is the signature rock of the planet earth itself. The other rocky planets, Mercury, Venus and Mars are covered with basalt as is the ocean. The floor of the earth has this beautiful and interesting rock type in abundance. Granite is made up of mineral grains. Granite is found in the Mourne and Wicklow mountains. It is used in the building industry and for monuments. Granite varies in colour from black to grey or pink. It was formed when magma cooled deep in the earth’s crust. The magma cooled very slowly allowing large crystals to form.
